LALIBELA

Visit to Rock-Hewn Churches

Right upon landing, we were immediately amazed by the stunning landscape in Lalibela. Travelling in the rather non-urbanized mountaineous area, we were also able to peep into the rural life in Ethiopia. We then took a day to visit another UNESCO World Heritage site - the 11 monolithic rock-hewn churches which have been spanning years of history since the 13th century. As the exact way of excavation remained in question even after years of investigation, this mystery was added to the interesting reflection of the journey.

Nothing could be better than having another warm gathering after the dinner. The campfire was a long-awaited opportunity for us to engage in the Ethiopian cultural  practices, particularly on music and  dance. Feeling the beat from the strong rhythm, our  dancing instincts were all ignited by the dazzling campfire. Most importantly, the interactions with the passionate performers were highly treasurable. We all had enjoyed a very lively night full of cheers and surprises.

After the excitement, the countless stars sprinkled through the vast sky took over. They brought the smiles of satisfaction on everyone to call it a day. These gleaming lights truly embellished the darkness, as well as our memories in the nature of Ethiopia.
