Language Attitudes of Ethiopian University Students towards Amharic and English

The objective of this study is to investigate the language attitudes of Ethiopian students (both native and non-native Amharic speakers) towards Amharic and English. The study provides a general picture of all the factors such as first language, socio-economic status and education policy, etc. affecting students’ language attitude towards the 2 languages. Questionnaire, interview and discussions are used to obtain data from the research subjects. 60 questionnaires were collected and 4 year-one College students from Department of Linguistics in Addis Ababa University were interviewed. The data was analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings shows that Ethiopian students generally have positive language attitudes towards both Amharic and English which favours the blossom of multilingual society of Ethiopia.
