An Analysis of the Language Policy in Ethiopia

As one of the multilingual and multicultural countries, Ethiopia has been facing a critical dilemma regarding the implementation and development language policy fulfilling the needs of the whole country, which is on the basis of the structure of federalism. Several governments that had ruled Ethiopia since the reign of Emperor Tewodros II adopted various language policies that suit their political orientation. As an inheritance, the modern government has also utilised it as the tool for the ease of communication, enhancement of nationality and unification of regions. The major objectives of this paper will be focusing on: a) The effectiveness of the Ethiopian language policy; b) The issues arise from the policy.
